KAUT-TV

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

KAUT-TV, built in Oklahoma City, OK in 1982, was REES’ first qualified sustainable design. Though what became known as sustainable principles were implemented on projects from the very beginning of the firm’s existence, KAUT was the first project that assembled several strategies into one project.

When the TV Station was constructed, it was published as one of ten buildings that save energy by design in an AIA publication.

The owner, Gene Autry, challenged REES to design a station building that would self heat at any time unless temperatures were lower than 5 degrees below zero. The owner’s goals were achieved through a building construction of concrete walls surrounded by a berm against the building providing natural insulation. With additional roof insulation, wall insulation and double pane glass windows located above the berm, the facility was naturally heated through the people in the building, the broadcasting transmitter, lights and a few small water heaters. KAUT achieved substantial electrical savings well before LEED and Sustainability were common terms.
