To improve the quality of life for residents and reduce the impact of a built community on the environment, Hillcrest Village, a senior living community in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, is a LEED Registered project.
In designing the community, several sustainable elements are incorporated into the site and facilities. The buildings within the community will be oriented on the site to improve energy efficiencies and minimize grading. To reduce water use, root collectors and a retention pond will capture rainwater and save it for irrigation uses. Minimal irrigation will be required since plant life will be native to Northeast Oklahoma. Condensation from air conditioning units will be recaptured and reused. This conservative plan for irrigation will minimize the cost of water and sewage processing. Solar collectors on the roofs will provide much of the energy used and double-pane glazing will help prevent solar heat gain reducing overall energy costs.
One of the biggest challenges for a community of this size in the Oklahoma climate is to cool the buildings in the summer. Residents’ apartments will be equipped with a thermostat for individual controls. Because residents will be responsible for their bills, they should be motivated to conserve resources. The units will have Energy Star appliances. Hillcrest Village is planned to be a unique living community designed for the needs of the residents and the environment.
