Pecan Village, a senior living community located in Ponca City, Oklahoma, is planned and designed to be an all-in-one, exclusive retirement community and is LEED Registered. The community will be located on a great prairie site with selected plant materials natural to the area so they do not require permanent irrigation in some cases and require only drip irrigation in most others.
The buildings within the community will be energy modeled to determine the best site orientation for energy savings. Since the summer temperatures can be quite high and sustained in Oklahoma, one of the biggest challenges is to cool the buildings in the summer. To reduce energy use but allow comfortable temperatures, each apartment will have its own thermostat and the resident will be responsible for their own bill to motivate the resident to properly control the temperature.
Lower water usage and increased water retention are high priorities in this dry climate. Plans are in place to capture rainwater and store it for irrigation uses through root collectors and a retention pond on site. The condensation from air conditioning units will be fed into a reservoir for later use and small wells will be used in the early years of development to supplement water needs. The collection and minimal distribution of water will minimize costs of water and sewage processing. Pecan Village is planned to be a unique living community designed for the needs of the residents and the environment.
